Is your church or community center ready to prepare people and room to reach out to this special needs population; to special needs families and caregivers of this population and to the group and host homes that are in your area and part of our church family? If so are we ready to make a commitment to sign people up, train and equip them in reaching out to one special needs person in our community? That is the right and proper question that is being posed to churches in Denver, Colorado Springs and along the Front Range.
Micro churches
Friendship Fellowship is a network of micro-churches reaching at least 5 special needs families who play tag team parenting at church. All Special needs families need a church tp come alongside in providing a community of believers, meeting spiritual needs, caring and administration work and helping people connect with others in their communities. Prayer, isolation and help around the house, transportation and social involvement are welcomed benefits of full participation in church.
The Friendship Network
The complexion of Friendship Fellowship at Mountain Springs, Washington Park Chapel and Mosaic and Roundup Fellowship and schools takes on building a network of support that many churches have only skimmed over. Friendship Fellowship has been a micro-church to a dozen special needs people at a time and so far about a dozen counselors with two agencies in Denver and with Mosaic in Colorado Springs.
Awareness leads to equipping and training
Designed to train and equip the able minded and bodied mentor for each special need’s friend, the approach has not generated people willing to take time to help meet the spiritual needs of the Friends (people with intellectual disabilities). This is in part because people in the church are unaware of the need; had a sustainable model and formed a network of special needs families helping other special needs families in addition to having Church families being trained to help meet the practical, physical and financial needs that so many special needs families have, including isolation, home up-keep; transportation and respite care.
Called to involvement
This is what it will take to start, support and sustain Friendship Fellowship. It gets down to the three T’s. People giving time, talent and treasure, the church preparing a room; invitation and commitment, and for leadership buy in and promotion.
